What Black Tea Tastes like
Not all black teas should taste the same. Golden Moon’s black teas have that wonderful full bodied flavor that these teas are known for. Our Black Teas also have complex notes that pop on your palate as the flavor lingers on your tongue. Each of our black teas uses the largest tea leaves possible, giving you a tea drinking experience that is unparalleled.
Black Tea is the most popular form of tea in the Western World. They are often sipped in the morning with the addition of milk and sugar. Some common black teas are English Breakfast Tea, Earl Grey (a flavored Black Tea,) and Irish Breakfast Tea. Black Teas are fully oxidized, giving them their full body and their characteristic dark color in the dry tea leaf.
There are three main countries that produce Black Tea - China, India and Sri Lanka. Each of these countries has their own styles of producing black teas. Chinese Black Tea often has hints of smokiness and a full flavor. Indian Black Teas are more on the malty side, with a richer flavor. Finally, Sri Lanka produces a cleaner tasting Black Tea that has a sharper flavor due to their characteristic astringency.
While Green Tea has been getting a lot of attention due to its health benefits, Black Tea is also extremely healthy in its own right. Black Tea has a high concentration of theaflavins and thearubigens which have a lot of health benefits that are normally attributed to green tea. Studies have shown that Black Tea can reduce cholesterol, reduce the chance of stoke and it lowers the risk of heart disease by 50%.
The story of black tea dates back to the 16th century, China. According to legend, there were soldiers passing through the village of Tong Mu at nighttime. Needing a rest, the soldiers made a makeshift bed by using a pile of tea leaves. The next morning the leaves had turned black and a new style of tea was born.
Black teas should have a full body, with a strong flavor. High quality black teas usually have notes of sweetness on the finish. These notes range from citrus to molasses. Due to their strong flavor, black tea is often served with milk and sweetener and they are also often labeled as “Breakfast Tea.”
