Bold, smoky, intense, and totally unique. That is how we describe our Lapsang Souchong. It is also why this tea is a favorite of high-end whiskey drinkers and cigar smokers, which is why people either love it or really dislike it. Like caviar or a traditional gin martini, it is one of those things that doesn’t really have a middle ground. The way the Chinese get this flavor is a closely guarded secret very few actually know. But what we do know is that the tea is smoked over pine logs twice, first during the drying phase and a second time when the tea oxidizes. This gives the tea both the famous smokiness as well as the subtle sophistication that sets our Lapsang apart from others.

Our Lapsang Souchong comes from the Wuyi Mountains in the Northern Fujian Province in China. With such a unique flavor, it is not surprising that the rumored discovery of this tea was by accident. During the Qing Dynasty, an army was passing through a tea farm and camped there for a few days. By the time they left, the tea farmers needed to dry and process their tea quickly to make sure they didn’t miss the caravan that was leaving town. Having almost no other choice, they lit pine fires and smoked the tea. The result was something new and special that is still sold to this day.
